Kingdom of Bahrain, which means two seas, has proclaimed itself as a Kingdom since 2002. It is an archipelago of 33 islands, which form the only island-state in the Arab world. The main island of Bahrain lies in the Arabian Gulf about halfway between Saudi Arabia to the West and Qatar to the East. Bahrain Island is the largest archipelago, around 30 miles from north to south and 10 miles from east to west. Currency: National currency is the Dinar, with each Dinar divided into 1,000 files. Notes are available in denominations of BD20, 10, 5 and 1. Coins are available in denominations of 500, 100. 50, 25 and 10 fils. The Dinar is officially pegged to the US dollar at the rate of $1 = BD0.377 (377 fils). Currency can be exchanged at hotels, banks, foreign exchange bureaus and the airport. There are no restrictions on movement of currency in and out of the country.
Entry Requirements: Visas are required by all visitors except nationals of UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar. What to See and Do in Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain is very rich in history. International archaeologists have only recently discovered ancient civilizations dating back to the third millennium BC. Bahrain's National Museum houses a vast collection of Bahraini artwork including painting, sculptures and ceramics. The Bait Al Quran, located in the centre of Manama houses a collection of rare manuscripts from the Holy Quran while the Museum of Pearl Diving - transformed into a traditional heritage centre in 1984 - is regarded as one of the most important and historic buildings in Bahrain.
Arad Fort, built in the 16th century, has recently undergone extensive restoration and is now illuminated at night for visitors to the site. The Bait Al Jasra or Jasra House was constructed by Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Khalifa in 1907 and was designed according to the traditional Bahraini architecture. The building materials include coral and palm tree trunks.
Another place of interest is The Tree of Life; a well-matured tree standing alone in the desert without any known water source. The fact that it stands alone has raised curiosity from visitors and specialists alike for many years.
Alternatively, the Al Areen Wildlife Park is situated in the village of Zallaq in the south of Bahrain. The park covers 8 sq.km and provides a natural habitat for several kinds of plants and more that 500 species of animals and birds including Arabian Reem gazelles, oryx, zebras, tortoises, desert hedgehogs and Arabian camels as well as ostriches, flamingos, eagles, storks and ducks.
Bahrain is an exciting place for water sports enthusiasts. Pearl diving has been Bahrain's heritage for over one hundred years and today the same productive oyster beds continue to flourish. They offer very unique and exciting recreational diving all year round. Water temperatures reach up to 34° C in the summer and 20° C in the winter.
The Formula 1 Grand Prix held in March/April, places Bahrain on the list of international motor racing circuits. The stunning new race track is just 45 minutes drive from the Sheraton Bahrain.
